Possibly as many as 50,000 iPads pre-ordered in first two hours

March 12th, 2010

The early adopters are out in force today. Based on analysis from Fortune’s Apple 2.0 blog & the investors of the AAPL board on Investor Village, it seems that as many as 50,000 iPads were pre-ordered in its first two hours of availability this morning. That’s pretty staggering demand, especially considering that on a typical day Apple only receives an average of 15,000 online orders for all products combined.

Naturally, we have no way of knowing if these numbers are exact as of yet. The numbers reflect over 50,000 orders placed in two hours, and the percentage of those that are iPad orders isn’t clear. Considering that the iPad was just made available for pre-order today, however, and the 15K daily average noted above, it’s likely the majority of orders placed this morning were indeed for the iPad. Additionally, the numbers only reflect the number of orders placed, not the number of units ordered; taken with the 2-pad maximum for today’s pre-orders, the data does suggest that somewhere in the neighborhood of 50,000 iPad pre-orders were placed within two hours of its availability.

This suggests a huge demand for the device, at least among early adopters. It will be very interesting to see if this trend is repeated once the iPad is actually available in stores.

One interesting note: even if all 50,000 of those iPads were the $499 version (which is very unlikely), based on iSuppli’s analysis of that unit’s build cost, it means Apple gained nearly $13.5 million in revenue profit from the iPad alone in a mere two hours — and that’s the bare minimum. Once you factor in all the other models and their higher prices, the numbers climb by several million dollars. Even for a company with a market cap in excess of $205 billion, that’s still pretty amazing performance.

‘Brooklyn’s Finest’ Director Antoine Fuqua Explains Why He Changed The Ending

March 12th, 2010

One of my favorite movies at Sundance in 2009 was Antoine Fuqua’s cop drama “Brooklyn’s Finest,” which finally hit theaters last week. One thing I’ve noticed about the movie since that Sundance cut is a small yet significant change made to the ending. When MTV’s Josh Horowitz spoke to Fuqua recently at the film’s press junket, I requested that he ask about the ending and why it was changed.

“That ending was an experiment,” Fuqua said. “The Sundance cut was a chance for me to put the movie in front of a real audience. It wasn’t done at all, by far. Everything is temporary. What it did was it allowed me to watch it with an audience reaction and then go back and go to my original notes, and then follow… again why I wanted to tell the story which dictated that ending.”

This is all pretty vague so far, and that’s because I’m trying to keep spoilers after the jump. So if you haven’t seen the movie, click onwards at your own risk.

In the movie as it now exists, the cops played by Don Cheadle and Ethan Hawke end up dead, killed in the line of duty. Richard Gere’s cop is seen in the new cut’s final frame; he’s walking away from a crime scene where he’s just killed two men and saved the women they kidnapped when everything stops in a freeze frame on a close-up of his face, then cut to black as the credits roll.

That’s not how things went in the Sundance cut however. Gere keeps walking, leaves the scene, carries out his retirement. The last shot of the movie is an extreme long shot showing us Gere sitting in a boat on a peaceful lake. He takes out a gun, puts it in his mouth — bringing us back to his first scene in the movie — and the screen cuts to black as we hear a loud bang.

Fuqua first addressed his original ending. “Before, I was doing it in a way because it was an independent movie, I had my freedom, I could do whatever I want, I read a New York Times article and I wanted to punch people in the gut with that, but then that would’ve been just me…” he pauses, “jerking off, so to speak. It wasn’t really about the story so much as it was about me wanting to make a statement about some of the things I read in the process of making this movie.”

Hawke, who was also present for the interview, added, “All of these characters, they’re really in a state of spiritual crisis. We had come across this [fact] that more cops had violent deaths by suicide than in the line of fire. It kind of guided our thinking on the movie about the state of mind these guys were in. But you know, movies are always– it’s a work in progress. You have to have a lot of good ideas to make a movie.”

Fuqua then circled things back around to the changed ending. “When I got to the ending with Richard and you see his face, and the blood and his eyes swollen, I said ‘That’s America.’ That’s kind of where we are right now. Dazed, confused, but then we’re still moving forward, there’s still some hope, we still have a chance. We’ve taken some hits, but we’re still standing. It kind of came out of everything that was happening.”

What’s your take on the new ending vs. the old? Are you hoping to see the original ending restored or at least included on the home video version of the movie?

Sarah Hyland Swimsuit Pictures

March 12th, 2010

Earlier today I had pictures of Julie Bowen, the mom from the show Modern Family, in her bathing suit so it would only be fair to have a few shots of her TV daughter doing the same thing. Here’s Sarah Hyland in her sweet tiger print swimsuit looking hot while playing in the surf. I know her character is like fourteen years old, but before everyone starts thinking I’m some sort of prevert, yes prevert is worse than a pervert, I looked it up and she’s nineteen so just drop it. That being said… Call me.

Because The World Needs To See More Stuntmen Blown Through Windows: A Second Trailer For Dante Lam’s FIRE OF CONSCIENCE

March 12th, 2010

focsmall.jpg

Our admiration for Dante Lam’s Beast Stalker is well documented in these pages and we’ve been anxiously awaiting the arrival of his Fire of Conscience for the past several months. Why? Because for old school Hong Kong violence, nobody does it better than Lam these days. And there’s a new trailer to demonstrate this fact below.

The investigation of a prostitute homicide brings headstrong,
heavy-handed Detective Manfred in an unlikely collaboration with sly,
man-of-the-world Inspector Kee from the Narcotics Bureau. When the DNA
samples of one of Manfred’s fellow officers are found at the crime
scene, implicating him as the prime suspect, Manfred must look beyond
the obvious to get to the truth. Meanwhile, Kee’s uncanny eagerness to
lend a helping hand every step of the way outside his own turf is
beginning to smack of evil. In the line of fire between high levels of
corruption and possible malice, Manfred must solve all the twists and
turns of the mystery, trying to figure out who his enemy is and how to
save his innocent partner from unfathomable disgrace. Unwittingly, he
is about to open a Pandora’s Box that will threaten to upend the entire
Hong Kong Police Force.

Rumor: Verizon BlackBerry Tour to get Push-to-talk soon, New BlackBerry in May?

March 12th, 2010

Boy Genius tends to know what he’s talking about when it comes to BlackBerry leaks – so when he says hes got some new details, we tend to believe him.

According to his tipsters, the Verizon BlackBerry Tour 9630 will be seeing an upgrade to BlackBerry OS 5.0 sometime in the next month. With that upgrade, says the same tipster, comes the option of push-to-talk functionality for an extra 5 bucks a month.

But that’s not all! This all leads up to the release of a brand spankin’ new piece of BlackBerry kit — presumably a new Tour — launching some time around May, complete with OS 5.0 and push-to-talk functionality out of the box. Alas, that’s all we know about it at this point; keep your ears to the ground for us, won’t you?

Paris Hilton’s Boobs Have To Be Magical

March 12th, 2010

It seems that Paris Hilton’s magical boobies are back, and just in time because I’m kinda hungover and not really in the mood for flat Paris Hilton pictures. Here she is giving us a nice little peek at her potential hotness the other night leaving some restaurant. I still think that she should be selling her own line of bras, the posts I’ve written alone about her magical cleavage would be enough advertising. I would just need a small percentage from the sales. Hit me up on Twitter and we’ll discuss.

Barry Pepper Joining the Cast of the Coen Brothers’ True Grit

March 12th, 2010

Barry Pepper

This is some great news! Variety is reporting that Barry Pepper is the latest to join the cast of the Coen Brothers’ remake of the western True Grit, which also stars Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld. Pepper will play the role of “Lucky” Ned Pepper, the notorious outlaw played by Robert Duvall in Henry Hathaway’s 1969 classic. The story follows a tough U.S. Marshal (Bridges) who helps a stubborn young woman (Steinfeld) track down her father’s murderer (Brolin). Scott Rudin and the Coens are producing, and Steven Spielberg is executive producing. Shooting is already under way in New Mexico.

Barry Pepper has lead an interesting career and I enjoy seeing him in any movie. His high point was in the 90’s with three great back-to-back roles: Saving Private Ryan, Enemy of the State, and The Green Mile. But then he got caught up in the Battlefield Earth aftermath and started appearing in only the occasional war movie (We Were Soldiers, Flags of Our Fathers) and other low level films that didn’t really go anywhere. He also appeared in Seven Pounds but that didn’t do anything either. He’s got the face of a war movie character, but I love seeing him in all kinds of movies. And now he’s taking on a western and I’m looking forward to it!
