Steven Spielberg Might Direct Robopocalypse? Cloverfield Screenwriter Hired

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

While there is nothing concrete, industry insiders and Deadline are speculating that Steven Spielberg might make Robopocalypse his next directorial feature film. DreamWorks Studios and Doubleday have acquired the property in November in a pre-emptive deal.  Daniel H. Wilson ’s unpublished manuscript (due in 2011), Robopocalypse tells the story of “the fate of the human race following a robot uprising.” Cloverfield screenwriter Drew Goddard has been hired to pen the big screen adaptation. Spielberg directing a film about the robot apocalypse written by Goddard? Consider me excited! Robopocalypse won’t be a hugely fantastical tale of the robot uprising, but aims to be more realistic. Wilson has a background in robotics and artificial intelligence which Doubleday Executive Editor and Vice President Jason Kaufman claims “grounds his story with a frightening level of realism and he has created an exhilarating story that we think audiences will really respond to.” Wilson has a Ph.D. in robotics from Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute, is a contributing editor to “Popular Mechanics,” and hosted a show on the History Channel called “The Works.” So yeah, expect something a lot more realistic than Transformers or Terminator Salvation. You might recognize Wilson’s name as his name is all over a bunch of those novelty survival guide books, including the 2005 book “How to Survive a Robot Uprising: Tips on Defending Yourself Against the Coming Rebellion,” which was optioned by Paramount Pictures, and “Where’s My Jetpack?: A Guide to the Amazing Science Fiction Future That Never Arrived,” “How To Build a Robot Army: Tips on Defending Planet Earth Against Aliens, Ninjas, and Zombies,” and “The Mad Scientist Hall of Fame: Muwahahaha!” His next book, titled “Bro-Jitsu: The Martial Art of Sibling Smackdown,” which has already been optioned by Nicalodeon Movies, is scheduled for release next year. Release Dates: Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin and Zemeckis’ Mars Needs Moms! Harrison Ford Confirms Spielberg and Lucas Have Agreed on a “Germ of an Idea” for Indiana Jones 5 Steven Spielberg Talks About the Tech and the Look of Tintin TV Series Terra Nova Could See Steven Spielberg Again Work With Dinosaurs Gremlins 3 Not In Development, Goonies Sequel Still Looking For a Story Zachary Quinto to Star in George Gershwin Biopic… Could This Be Spielberg’s Next Film?

Rumor Mill: Vodafone’s own 845 Budget Android Phone?

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Rumour has it on the interwebz that Vodafone are creating their very own budget phone for around €150 (approx. £130) and it should be released before the summer in May. The rumour seems to have started from Dutch website Allaboutphones.nl where they say the phone will pack the latest Android OS 2.1 ( can I call it the latest? ), a resistive 2.8″ QVGA screen, a 3.2 mega pixel camera and of course Wi-Fi, bluetooth, 3G, aGPS & an accelerometer as standard. If this is true it seems to follow in the foot steps of T-mobile with their budget phones – the T-mobile Pulse and the Pulse Mini . Being this cheap maybe we’ll see this available on pay-as-you-go?  If correct, it  would also go with Vodafone’s current commitment to stocking the latest Android handsets and publishing apps on the Market to go with their new 360 service which integrates social networking and contacts. In fact, the other week there was an app published by Vodafone which said “this is a test, do not download”…… so what do you? Egging me On? Psshhh – I downloaded it! It seems to have been some sort of Vodafone maps/navigator. Maybe this will come pre-loaded too – who knows? Vodafone is yet to make a solid announcement though it seems to be referred to as the “Vodafone 845″, the name could change around launch though. Looks like we’ll have to wait and see! Rupert Wyatt Might Direct Fox’s Planet of the Apes Prequel

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

And I thought this project was dead! Deadline is reporting that British director Rupert Wyatt is Fox’s top choice to direct the Planet of the Apes prequel. Wait – there’s a Planet of the Apes prequel? We’ve been reporting various rumors and rumblings about a new Apes movie for years, but it never got off the ground. Now this hits almost out of nowhere. Deadline’s report is also suspiciously brief, stating: “No start date, but Wyatt’s come aboard to develop to direct .” They also say the script they’re using was written by Rick Jaffa ( The Relic ) and Amanda Silver ( The Hand That Rocks the Cradle ). So who is this Rupert Wyatt guy anyway? Wyatt is a British filmmaker who got his start directing a few short films. He then directed his first feature called The Escapist in 2008, which was one of my favorite movies of that year. He hasn’t directed anything since then, but if you’ve seen The Escapist (and not many people have), you will agree with me about how much potential this guy has, especially if they give him a huge project like Planet of the Apes . Speaking of which, I have a feeling Fox wants to keep this grounded and low budget, so that it can’t potentially flop big like Tim Burton’s Planets of the Apes . But details are sparse at the moment and it’s too early to tell anyway. The last time we wrote about Planet of the Apes was back in December of 2008 and it was only to provide an update on an Apes prequel called Caesar written (and to be directed) by Scott Frank . However, it looks like that project was thrown out and Fox may be going a different route, but then again Deadline never mentions the name of the project that Wyatt is now developing (it could be Caesar ). I did a quick search and found an article from January this year on CHUD that confirms that Frank left the prequel, which explains why Wyatt is now on-board instead. We’ll let you know if we hear anything else about this, so stay tuned. Thoughts? Discover More: Movie News , Opinions , Rumors

Lady Gaga Is Celibate Now

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

The freakishly weird singer Lady Gaga has retorted against the rumors that she’s a hermaphrodite. Even after that, it was rumored that she stole some chick’s boyfriend, but she wants to clear the air. With or without the extra male parts, Gaga wants us all to know that she is not bangin’ anyone’s man. Actually she’s single and celibate. She said, “I’m single. I haven’t got time to spend on the road to get to know anyone. Even Lady Gaga can be celibate, you don’t have to have sex to be loved.” Has Gaga been having some bad sex, because I know a few guys that could fix that for her. She added, “Orgasms are the biggest obstacles for women. Sex should be fun, beautiful and colorful but women get the short end of the stick. We’re just receivers. We can’t talk about sex, we can’t sing about sex.” She is crazy, but this black lace getup she’s wearing is doing it for me.

Rogers Getting Samsung Galaxy Spica In Late March

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Call it the Galaxy Spica, Lite or whatever the heck you want – the point is that Rogers in Canada is getting Samsung’s second “Galaxy” branded phone and dummy units have already begun arriving in stores: It’s looking like a mid-to-late March release for this 3.2-inch Android phone with 3MP camera, 3.5mm headset jack and some other goodies. While I would expect it to launch with Android 1.5 or possibly 1.6, MobileSyrup is saying it could come with Android 2.0 which would be a big benefit for a lot of Canadian robot seekers. We’ll keep you posted.

Joss Whedon & Eliza Dushku Teaming Up Again for a Movie?

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

It wasn’t long ago that Joss Whedon’s last TV series “Dollhouse” aired its final episode, but it looks like Whedon and “Dollhouse” star Eliza Dushku will be reteaming again for another feature project. Found on the gossip site Hollywood Life (via SlashFilm ) is a quote from Dushku talking about a new project. “I would say that we would [be working on something new very soon]!” Dushku said. “I think we’re going to work on a kickass feature together that we’ve been thinking about for a few years.” Well that sounds pretty cool – but exactly what is it? SlashFilm thinks it’s a horror project called Goners that’s been around since 2005. Goners is a supernatural horror thriller of some kind, but Whedon has been very secretive about it and we don’t know really know what it’s about. One quote says that “it’s the story of a young woman’s journey that involves a great deal of horror and some heroics.” Whedon describes it another time as “a fantasy thriller , it is pretty dark and it’s all me. So people will pretty much know what that means if they look at my body of work.” That’s not much help. He adds that “it’s a new universe set in the present day with a new concept for me and a new bunch of characters. It’s been a long time since I got to do that, so that’s really fun.” It does? It could always be some other new project that isn’t Goners , but I don’t think so. Even though I didn’t watch “Dollhouse”, I’m still a fan of Joss Whedon and want him to direct another movie, since it’s been a long time ( Serenity in 2005) and his feature projects all keep falling apart. Goners is listed as “on the backburner at Universal,” so let’s hope it doesn’t fall apart before we find out if it was the one she was even talking about.
